I travel all over Texas for work and see some strange and wonderful things. This blog is documentation of those wonders.

Oh, the irony...
I wish I could explain the context of this refrigerator magnet. Those who work with me will be able to figure out where this photo was taken.
A White Trash View
I can't say what small town this was taken in but this was the view from my assigned duty point today. Again, I love my job.

A Traffic Wonder
This is a screen shot from the Traffic.com app on my phone. Note the time at the top. I love my job.
A Breakfast Wonder
On Tuesday morning, I went down to the breakfast room at the Holiday Inn Express Mexia. I got some raisin bran and some juice. I stared skeptically at Fox News on the TV above the fireplace. Then I looked over and saw this wonder:
That's right. You press the yellow button at the bottom and in 45 seconds two perfect pancakes come out. The front desk clerk said all the Holiday Inn Expresses are supposed to get them. Another reason to stay at one of my favorite two star hotel chains.

Schulenburg Archive, Part 2
The Von Minden
It's supposedly haunted and the last hotel with a working movie theater inside. I was too scared to go inside but this place is really creepy and there are lots of stories. I stayed at the Best Western instead.

Remembering April 19, 1993: A Trip to Mount Carmel
I was just a little fourth grader when I watched the Branch Davidian compound burn on television. I had no idea what it meant or what later investigations, both congressional and non-governmental, would reveal. Did the government massacre innocent people who thought they had first amendment rights or were they terrorists or was it a mass suicide? (See: "Waco: The Rules of Engagement")
Anyway, I was in the area for work and decided to stop by the site of the compound. It was morbid fascination at first but it ended up being really sad. There were no signs that said "Keep Out" or "No Trespassing." There was a welcome sign and several memorials. We didn't see a soul. Just some horses.
Above is the entrance to the property. If you drive back further you'll see the Branch Davidian's new church, more memorials, and what is left of the compound that was destroyed on 4/19/93. All that's really left is the swimming pool, full of standing water. It looked like they had planted a garden where the buildings once stood. Again, not a soul was seen.
